The Albion

A few weeks ago we were out and about enjoying a lovely sunny day in London. However, a football match that we wanted to watch was about to start so we started searching for a pub that would have the game on. That’s how we discovered The Albion, near Blackfriars Bridge.

The bartender, a friendly Canadian, greeted us with a smile and a cold cider. The cider tasted good on a warm day. The game hadn’t started yet so we were able to find a table in front of a large TV screen.

I’m the type of person that’s always hungry and since we were going to be there for the entire match I decided to order some bangers and mash. The Better Half ordered some chicken wings and hummus. The food was decent and hit the spot.

Soon more people straggled in. By the end of the game, many people were standing to watch. It wasn’t overly crowded but I was glad that we arrived in time for a table.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the pub. It was just the right size to watch a game with a crowd. Not too big or small. And the staff was excellent. I would go back if the opportunity arises.

This weekend Liverpool plays Chelsea. This is a big match. Liverpool is ahead of Chelsea by five points and if Liverpool wins they have a decent shot of staying in first. Keep your fingers crossed for us, unless you’re Chelsea or Man City fans. I understand.

  1. I keep trying to make myself care about football but I just can’t do it. I hope you win though I know my bh will be sad but that’s because she’s a man u fan so out of the running anyway.

  2. I’m a Chelsea fan but let the best team win…hope it’s a good game :)

  3. Looks like fun! I like your pub posts. :)

  4. Nice to know that the cider is cold. Since I’m completely indifferent about soccer, I’ll root for your team to win. Feel free to root for the Yankees when you’re state-side.

How are the Yankees doing this season? I’ll cheer for them as long as they aren’t playing Boston.

      • The Yanks are in first, playing well if you exclude a pitching pine tar cheating incident that resulted in a 10-day player suspension (and I think it happened vs. the Sox). Your (boo, hiss) Red Sox are in fourth, but only 3.5 games out.

I see they’ll only 2.5 games back now. Still really early in the season so who knows what will happen. I do miss walking by Fenway after work on game nights. It was a fun atmosphere.

  5. I’m always hungry too :).

  6. Jo Bryant says:

Yep…I know the always hungry feeling. Good food is always a good match

  7. The food is the best part of watching football, at least it is here.

  8. You know I’m still rooting for Man City to the end. :)

good luck to your team! I can’t choose sides because I have no idea about football…. and we are right in the thick of hockey playoffs over here. A cold beer in a pub with a great big TV would be perfect. This place actually is a very uncanny resemblance to our local pub. amazing.

    • TBM says:

I’ve heard, but haven’t confirmed, that The Albion is owned by a Canadian so that may account for the resemblance. What hockey team are you supporting?

Albion looks like a wonderful pub, TBM. Nice to know that your favourite Liverpool plays Chelsea this weekend. Hope your favourite team wins. I don’t follow the EPL much though many of my friends are big fans. When I think about it, I realize that I haven’t watched a sports match in a pub in a long time. I should do that sometime. It is lots of fun. Happy Sunday!

Looks a very orderly match watching session :-)
    Bangers and Mash Mmmm .
Did they win … I’m not well up on football …

Unfortunately Liverpool lost this weekend. They’re still in the lead for the moment, but who knows what will happen next weekend.

  12. Things did not go well for Liverpool, did they?

On the plus side, my son scored his first goal in soccer this weekend. Which I guess gives him a higher score than all of Liverpool combined.

    • TBM says:

Liverpool lost. I felt sorry for Gerrard, the captain, who made a mistake and allowed the first goal. He doesn’t make many mistakes and this one may be costly.

Congrats to your son! I played when I was little and loved it.

  13. For a second there, I accidentally read “hummus” as “humans.” Um…oops. XD

  14. canadians are a friendly bunch on the whole–

  15. I don’t follow soccer, but I love bangers and mash!

  16. So sorry that Liverpool did not come out a winner on this one! But, I am hoping that the delicious cider, bangers and mash, and great company made up for that? :)

  17. Sorry to so late getting here. I’m trying to catch up, and I’m cheering for your team!

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    A pub with website…so modern ;)

We also have a lot of cafe and pub that show football…they become more crowded during world cup

Any time the staff is excellent, I come back for another cider. I’ve been to bars out here where the atmosphere is cool but the staff totally sucks! I usually don’t go back. Paying people to be sucky to be is a waste of time, I can get that kind of service for free at home :)
